WNBA freshman Angel Reese makes double-double history

Chicago Sky forward Angel Reese made WNBA history by recording seven consecutive double-doubles — the longest streak by a rookie in the league.

The former LSU star set the record in Thursday’s 83-72 home win over the Dallas Wings. Reese scored 16 points and a career-high 18 rebounds.

In basketball, a double-double occurs when a player scores in double figures in at least two of the five major statistical categories: points, rebounds, assists, steals, and blocked shots.

“I’m glad we finally got a win, and that too at home,” Reese said in the ESPN broadcast after the game. “It’s very exciting for me. I try to give myself some comfort and tell myself I’m doing a good job. But I still have a lot to learn and I’m excited to get into this league and win some more.”

As CBS Sports reports, Reese surpassed the previous record of six consecutive double-doubles set by Tina Charles in 2010 and Cindy Brown in 1998. Charles still holds the rookie season record with 22 double-doubles.

Reese still has a chance to match that, with eight double-doubles this year and 26 games left. She is currently averaging 12.4 points and 10.8 rebounds per game.

When asked about her accomplishment in a postgame news conference, Reese named other strong players who came before her, including fellow LSU alumnus Sylvia Fowles. Fowles, who holds the record for most double-doubles (193) in a WNBA career, called Reese “Miss Double-Double Queen” when Reese was still in college.

“I love Sylvia. She was a great person and a great mentor to me when I was at LSU,” Reese said. “I know she would be very proud of me.”

Their historic success comes ahead of Chicago’s much-anticipated rematch against the Indiana Fever, led by another star player, Caitlin Clark.
