“His greatness will never be surpassed” – Phil Jackson explains why LeBron James and Kobe Bryant will never surpass Michael Jordan

For Phil, Kobe and LeBron will always be second only to MJ.

Phil Jackson rarely downplays the accomplishments and contributions of modern NBA stars like LeBron James and Kobe Bryant. However, “The Zen Master” firmly believes that no other player can ever surpass the impact and greatness of Michael Jordan.

Jackson’s interesting perspective stems from his first-hand experience of coaching Jordan during his tenure with the Chicago Bulls. However, as he closely watched the game evolve over the years, Phil recognized that while Kobe and LeBron were greats in their own right, only MJ had the unique qualities that made him a true generational NBA superstar.

“They may break the records he set or maybe win more championships. Michael was 28 when he won his first championship, and LeBron may win one before he gets to that age and have a chance to win more than six. But Michael’s image as a player will last forever and his greatness will never be surpassed,”  Jackson told Bulls.com in 2009.

Mike thinks only Kobe deserves the comparison

Between James and Bryant, the Los Angeles Lakers legend is more often recognized for his tireless work ethic and unwavering commitment to excellence. These qualities have not gone unnoticed as Jackson once revealed that Jordan himself acknowledged it.

According to Jackson, MJ said that only Kobe deserved to be compared to him, because he did everything that was necessary to reach that level.

“I never said Kobe was better than MJ,”  the legendary coach once said.  “MJ just told me Kobe was the only player who did anything comparable.”

MJ’s contribution to the game is incomparable

Indeed, Jordan left an indelible mark on the game. His impact extended far beyond his individual accomplishments, raising the level of play in the NBA and setting new standards for athleticism, skill and competitiveness.

Furthermore, MJ’s influence transcended borders, making basketball a global phenomenon and inspiring millions of young athletes to pursue their dreams. Bryant and LeBron, on the other hand, did the same during their time respectively.

However, Jackson argued that he had not yet seen a player take off like Jordan. For Phil, perhaps no one could match what Jordan did for the game.
